Immune dysregulation is one of the main causes of eczema, characterised by a hypersensitive immune system which produces excessive inflammation upon contact with allergens. The hygiene hypothesis suggests that reduced microbial exposure in an increasingly sterile world has led to this immune dysregulation and caused the increasing prevalence of eczema over the years. Due to the impact of the gut microbiota on the immune system, the probiotic strain Lactobacillus salivarius LS01 has been studied for its ability to restore balance to the immune system and address the underlying cause of mild eczema2. Clinical trials have shown this specific probiotic strain helps to reduce many of the symptoms of mild eczema, including itchiness, and reduce the occurrence of symptoms in children and adults3.
